PAMPANGA’S 2020 MISS UNIVERSE REPRESENTATIVE IS PAL EXPRESS CABIN CREW
There are many similarities in the airline industry and pageantry—most especially in terms of the standards that are required of the women who navigate within these two highly-meticulous worlds. Flight attendants and beauty queens are often scrutinized against the most rigid ideals of poise and physical appearance. But there is much more to being truly beautiful—and that is what Patricia Santos, Pampanga’s 2020 Miss Universe Philippines representative, wishes to impart to both travel and pageant enthusiasts.
At just 27, Patricia has already flown miles and seen much of the world as a perk of being a Senior Cabin Crew for PAL Express. “I like interacting with people and I like being of service literally,” Patricia shares. “It empowers me when I am able deliver satisfaction to whoever I am working with that’s why I chose the service industry and became a flight attendant. I instantly see the impact that I am able to make by personally dealing with my passengers and that makes me love it.”
True to the values of the flagship carrier, Patricia holds temperance and empathy as key core values of her job. “As flight attendants we get the chance to make it a beautiful journey for them and it makes us a significant part in creating memories and stories as they also are for us. With that being said, the biggest challenge that comes with it is how crucial your role is. You have to be accurate with your actions because it could make or break a flight and a passenger’s experience. Another challenge is keeping your emotions in check and realizing that above all else, you must always face everything and everyone professionally. One negative encounter with a passenger must not affect your service to the hundred others who still await and deserve your buong pusong alaga.”
With such virtues already ingrained in Patricia’s natural disposition, it is not surprising for many to find her transition into the world of pageantry to have been effortless. Patricia relates that, much like something that runs in the blood, her sisters—who were campus beauty queens—inspired her to venture into Miss Universe Philippines journey.
With the Miss Universe Philippines experience nearing its climax, Patricia shared her key takeaway: “The best part of it is we have the learning journey. That’s where they teach us how to find our most authentic self and get to know ourselves to the core. It empowers us and makes sure that we stay to be phenomenal women even beyond the Finals night.”
When asked of her message to those who wished to learn from her story, Patricia highlighted every person’s individual ability to become successful. “From my story of being bullied for how I look to achieving my dream as a flight attendant and now a beauty contender, I want people to learn that you are limitless. Only you can tell how far you can go, how high you will fly and when you will take off. The flight is [going to] be turbulent sometimes, but you pin your own wings and you soar high. Not alone, because on board with you are a hundred people that support you and a hundred more that you get to inspire. Take off, land and most importantly, enjoy the flight,” she imparted as a final note.
