Among the norms that society has dictated upon women is the age at which they are deemed “past their prime” or beyond the years for development and success. Mei-Jen Chen, a 48-year-old Taiwanese national who recently completed her Cabin Crew Training at OMNI Aviation, proved that such boundaries on women are not only outdated, but invalid.

Mei-Jen, fondly nicknamed Carol, hails from Hsinchu City in Taiwan. Partnered with her striking mien is an almost-tangible aura of self-assurance. At first glance, it is apparent that Carol is a woman of great substance. In fact, during the recently held graduation for Cabin Crew Batch 20-02, Carol’s husband, Tung Yu Pan, proudly remarked “You chose the right person. She’s a power woman!”

As such, it is no surprise to know that Carol is not only a holder of a Master’s in Business Administration from the China University of Technology but also in the process of obtaining her PhD in Management Science. On top of this, she is a restaurant owner, the president of an integrated cooperation and a professor for the Min-Sin University of Science and Technology.

When asked why she wanted to become a cabin crew, especially given her already-established background, Carol responded that she wished to become a professional cabin crew so she “can teach [this] in the university.”

Despite her age and experience, Carol remains avidly open to more opportunities to be taught and trained. “I love to take the challenge to learn new things. To experience the cabin crew training program is the precious opportunity for me to learn something that I don’t know yet,” she shared.

But the experience is not without its trials. Carol disclosed her anxieties at the beginning of her training. “I always think about maybe they would laugh behind me because I don’t speak good English and my age [is] already old. But I just make myself strong and be dear with them. At last, it’s proof I am thinking too much.” With such discoveries, she also expressed her deeper appreciation for flight attendants after her training. She says she now sees that they “play the role of guardian angels for the passengers.”

“In all, I am happy to experience the Fly Attendants Program [sic] and have my dream come true,” she closed.
