Revent Events

Long grueling years of training. Adrenaline-inducing instances during flights. An ever-changing career industry.
These may seem as daunting challenges that could discourage even the boldest of aviators. However, Captain Kevin Surrier, an OMNI Aviation alumnus recognized as the Loyalty Awardee during the 2019 Pilots’ Graduation Ceremony, imparted useful insights for those who wish to chart the skies in the age when flying is the new driving.
An Arduous Journey
Kevin has spent the better part of the last five years in OMNI Aviation, training to become a bona fide pilot. He first began his pilot journey in 2014, right after he graduated from college. His hard work has paid off as he is now a proud holder of PPL, CPL, IFR and FI licenses. According to him, patience truly plays a crucial part in one’s journey to becoming a pilot. “Patience factors in almost everything. You have to be patient with yourself when you’re studying,” he stressed. “Even when you’re flying, you have to be patient. Hindi pwedeng nagmamadali.”
When asked what helped him keep his fortitude throughout his training, he responded simply: “The flying makes it worth it.” He went on to relate his share of misadventures in terms of documentation, cancellations and flying difficulties. “I’ve had my share of troubles… pero when you’re in the air, you just don’t care,” Kevin said with a smile.
The Next Mile in His Ascent
Kevin is now set onto achieving a new milestone: becoming a part of OMNI’s assemblage of instructors. As someone who had remarkable mentors, he believes that helping shape the pilots of the new decade is a worthwhile cause.
He disclosed that what he believes to be the most important trait in a pilot is situational awareness. “It’s [important] to realize [when] something is wrong and to immediately adapt to the situation.”
And finally, he gave a concluding pro-tip that he professed to share with his future protegees: “When I become a flight instructor, I would really make sure that a student has a designated pocket money, sealed. Just to make sure that whatever happens, they won’t gamble their way back home.”
At just 25 years old, Captain Surrier is well on his way to seeing, training and breeding the next generation of aviation professionals.
